I would like to share with you a reflection that Joan Geraghty ’88 shared on Facebook today……
“You only are free when you realize you belong no place—you belong every place—no place at all.”
-Maya Angelou
Good morning peeps and Happy SUNDAY, Passover and Palm Sunday. Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten it’s also Sweet 16 game day for our beloved ZAGS!
Earlier this week, one of my Zag pals, Joe Poss, suggested the shell sign, SHOW UP, and a reflection on what being a Zag means to me. My first reaction, there are plenty of other Zags who are much more articulate than I. Why not ask them? I accept the challenge. Thank you for stretching me out of my comfort zone. 💙
This morning, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to have a STRONG BACK, SOFT FRONT, and WILD HEART. Yes, what it means to be a ZAG! I had waffles with Brene Brown for breakfast (see link). It’s stormy out, too rough to row. These 3 things I often think about as I pull my oars across the bay. How can we weather storms with strength, wisdom, and an open heart?
Rowing gives me a strong back. Caring for myself enables me to show up for others. Putting myself out there, solo on the water, cultivates courage to be alone. Belonging to myself first. facing the waves head-on with the confidence and wisdom to know, this too shall pass. Those waves also help me become more flexible, adaptable, and open to change.
SOFT FRONT is more than just the waffles in my tummy. It’s staying open and vulnerable. Showing up as I am. Resisting the temptation to armor up and fit in. Having the confidence to be true to myself. Seeing and being seen. Continuing to paddle when the outcome is uncertain.
WILD HEART - love, belonging, and gratitude. Being awake and aware of the pain and suffering in the world. Waking up every morning focused on finding JOY and gratitude. A sense of belonging and purpose. committed to ourselves and to each other. Discovering our strengths and helping us become the best that we can be. Living our best lives.
That’s what being a ZAG means to me. It’s not about a degree. It’s the degree to which we SHOW UP for the MAGIS, the greater good. When you feel that sense of community and common purpose, you are a ZAG.
Thank you, ZAGS, for loving me for who I am. Laughing with me about all my eccentricities. Holding my hand and lifting me up during times of uncertainty. We can do so much more together than we ever could alone. 🚣♀️ 🏃♀️ ☀️ +whyirow +familylifejacket +bettertogether (see Brene Brown – Strong Back, Soft Front, Wild Heart)
