Reflecting on all the blessings in our lives as we prepare to travel “over the river and through the woods,” I heard from one of University Advancement’s student employees—a young man whose future is surely bright, thanks to the Jesuit education he is enjoying (that you help make possible) and the immense gratitude that swells in his heart. As we all count our blessings, I hope you enjoy the reflection he shared with me this week:
The journey back home starts soon, but these last few days before break really encapsulate the college experience in my opinion. It’s hectic, but amidst the hustle and bustle, it’s those little moments that stand out. When someone offers to go get food, or to take a five-minute break between flashcards or editing a paper are the pick-me-ups that make me so thankful for the Gonzaga community.
It’s my last year of school, but my first as an RA, and watching community grow, not just in my hall but across campus, is inspiring to see.
It’s wonderfully cyclical. Every new year, people come to this place and experience something special. New friends are made, new passions are discovered and for all our differences and unique quirks, we are bound together as Zags.
Over the past few days, my residents have started their Thanksgiving travels early, and the 96-person residence hall I call home has gotten a whole lot quieter. Without as many to people to wave to, I think about the students who have been itching to see home, and I think about those that would rather stay on campus. I think about the students who can’t travel home yet because home is too far, and winter break is too close to warrant a second trip. I think about the Spokanites, who are never far away from a home cooked meal. I think of my brother, who I am so proud of every day and get to drive back home with him to Portland. We are all Zags and with whatever awaits us over Thanksgiving break, we have a home here on campus.
That’s why Gonzaga matters to me. We all share this place and share those little moments that bring us closer together. For however hectic this time may be, and for however hectic this year can still become, I know I’ve got Zags by my side and am so thankful to anyone who has helped make Gonzaga possible.
Thanks for the words of gratitude, Jack. You, your brother, classmates and residents are why we all do what we do. Safe travels……
Happy Thanksgiving!
