It all started with our inaugural venture into women’s basketball

Today, in particular, this story seems very fitting to share… a reminder of the “layers of family” that are created by the relationships forged within the GU community.

Nancy Driscoll has been a part of the winning tradition of Gonzaga University women’s basketball from the beginning. Her status as a Gonzaga University super fan dates back to her time playing basketball for GU more than 55 years ago and has been going strong ever since.

Like most 18-year-olds fresh out of high school, Nancy wanted to get away from her home in California. After touring universities in Portland and Seattle, she fell in love with the city of Spokane and Gonzaga. She was a freshman member of GU’s inaugural venture into women’s basketball in 1962-63, but it wasn’t until her sophomore season she and the rest of her teammates tasted that first victory, thereby launching GU’s winning tradition.

Nancy continued to follow the Zags and shared a passion for cheering them on with her dear friend and fellow GU fan, Glo Ross. After Glo passed away in 2008, Nancy memorialized her friend by creating a permanent scholarship in Glo’s name for students in the women’s basketball program. In addition, Nancy has supported several other projects at the University and has included GU in her estate planning by creating a charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT).

“I love my education, and giving back feels good. I had a wonderful experience at Gonzaga that made such a difference in my life. To me, I spend money to make a difference in people’s lives, and I get so much back just watching what it does. You always get more than you give, as far as I’m concerned.”  Nancy is still actively involved with Gonzaga (can be spotted on campus frequently - has even audited some classes) and never misses a women’s basketball game!
