From ordination, to ZagMariners, to Gold

Busy with blessings, this past week and the days ahead are full for the Gonzaga family. So many reasons to celebrate:

First, the University community was able to help play host to the congregation of Jesuits West this past week and weekend, which included the ordination of five priests. Dozens of Jesuits from throughout the west were on campus for several days – many who have never visited GU. It was our honor to help host, which included a special welcome video from President McCulloh highlighting the health and growth of the University, our mission. So much of what Dr. McCulloh proudly shares is directly connected to each of you – helping to make all of this a reality. (Be sure to check out the video - never before seen aerial views of campus – WOW!)

Second, students and faculty got a sneak peek at the UW School of Medicine-GU Health Partnership building, touring through the spaces where medical students and Zags studying human physiology will be when the building opens (in the coming weeks!). The brief video (linked directly above) provides you with the student view and voice of what they experienced as they got this first glimpse of the new facility.

Third, last Friday our family of four headed west for the Zags night at the Mariners event. As we made our way across the state to join together in fellowship and celebration with Zag Nation and with a chorus of voices of two little ones (under the age of 9) filling the car, I was reminded of the many voices who have given me guidance and advice along my journey. I have learned so much from so many—I could write the longest email listing everyone and the lessons you’ve blessed me with; however, instead, I’ll pay it forward with a little something for you to listen to in your free time (on the road or otherwise): The Gonzaga Podcast Network offers opportunities to learn about a variety of things with content by Zags, for Zags — students, parents, staff, faculty, alumni and supporters.

As for that Zag gathering at the Mariners game….it was a glorious day of Zag cheer at the ballpark celebrating our shared connections as Zags and honoring the legacy of alumnus and coach Danny Evans. You HAVE TO SEE THIS beautiful tribute, produced by the Mariners, which includes the massive ceremonial first pitch from Graham Evans (seven year old son of Kellie and Danny Evans, grandson to Professor Emeritus Paul Buller). Danny has left an indomitable imprint on hundreds of Zags – being a voice of wisdom, mentorship, friendship. Tens of thousands in attendance at the game heard his story and understand the power of the Gonzaga community, understand how we support one another.

The evening was made even more wonderful knowing that those who attended contributed nearly $10,000 for the Alumni Scholarship!

Looking ahead, alumni of Gonzaga’s classes of 1970, 1971, and 1972 (a few pictured below) will be welcomed back to campus for their Gold Club reunion beginning this Friday. These classes experienced a rapidly changing Spokane skyline as the city neared its 100th birthday and the legendary Expo ’74. It’s going to be a blast to hear from these Zags how far they and their Alma Mater have come since they were students.

We truly are lucky to be part of such an active, generous, and fun community. Thanks again for all you do in service of Gonzaga University and its students!
