How lucky are we…? Honored and grateful to carry on Dr. Earl Miller’s legacy of care and joy thanks to his generosity, enjoy the below…
Dr. Earl Miller’s life was devoted to healing and helping others. In a wounded world, Earl was a healer. He healed the physical body with medical arts and healed the spirit with laughter and love. Born and raised in Post Falls, Idaho, he graduated from Gonzaga University in 1965 (sophomore year picture to the left) and went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine from the Portland (Oregon) School of Medicine. Earl performed his internship at Sacramento County Hospital followed by service in the Vietnam War.
While on duty in Vietnam, he volunteered for MedCap missions along the Mekong River Delta, bringing the healing of modern medicine to a people devastated by war. He also volunteered to accompany critically wounded troops from Southeast Asia to hospitals in Japan. If a solider did not make it, Earl personally phoned the family on his return to the United States to offer the healing of consolation.
He was a gynecologist in the San Francisco area for 17 years and was most proud of the caring relationships he developed with his patients. He was known for being a generous man with his time. In any group, he was always the one who made any newcomers feel warmly accepted. He knew the true healing power of listening and took the time to really hear people. He brought the same joy and warmth to women dying of cancer as he did to those who were about to give birth.
When Dr. Earl Miller learned of his own terminal illness, he decided he wanted to help young people get an education and thought of his alma mater. He created the Donald and Betty Miller Scholarship at Gonzaga University through a gift in his will. Named for his parents, the scholarship was funded when Earl passed away in 1991. He was in his late 40s. It has benefited nearly 200 students in Gonzaga’s College of Arts and Sciences since then.
PS – This weekend is “reunion weekend”… more ZaGratitude coming your way!
