This evening as I wrapped up work to drive home, I ceremoniously shut my laptop and removed my readers to look outside after an hour or so of concentrated screen-work. It was dark. Like, really dark. I did a double-take at my watch to make sure I was not late to pick up the wee-ones. Phew. 5:10. Ugh. 5:10! It was so dark so early! ‘Tis the season…
Yet, I realized something as I packed my bag and said “good night” to my remaining colleagues. What kept each of us going through the darkness was the same thing: the gift that is Gonzaga. President McCulloh told a story in his address to faculty and staff this fall about the ways in which the University serves as a beacon in times of trouble—I encourage you to read how his reflection inspired the themes of this year’s Report of the President featured in the Winter Gonzaga Magazine (coming soon to a mailbox near you).
You see, right now (and not just because we are getting less sunlight than any other time of year—the solstice is on Wednesday, December 21st—we’re almost to the turning point!) is a pivotal moment for Gonzaga and all who rely on it to lead the way through the darkness. Gonzaga is hope for the future, as it opens eyes, doors, and minds. Gonzaga is stability for families who seek safety and comfort for their most prized assets—the children, parents, cousins, and family who live, work, and learn here. Gonzaga is the light in times of sadness, confusion, division and fear. And helping to keep that light aflame is a job my colleagues and I approach with great love and care.
Because of people like you, passion for this place burns brightly. Gifts from the Gonzaga community provide the fuel necessary to help the lives of students, faculty, staff, family and friends steer true toward the future. There have been meager years when the light dimmed, and there have been years when Gonzaga’s light shone as brightly as the sun. One thing is for certain: it must never go out.
So, in this season of giving, I hope you feel gratitude for all you do for others, and especially that which you do for Gonzaga University. Everyone in this community is thankful for the light—a flame I hope you’ll join me in stoking further in the coming year.
