First in the Family House

The First in the Family House LLC is a supportive and empowering community centering the experiences of students who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree. This residential space fosters a sense of belonging and community by connecting first-generation college students with peers who share similar experiences, challenges, and aspirations.  

Residents will have access to tailored resources and mentorship opportunities to help them navigate the academic, social, and personal aspects of college life. The community encourages open dialogue about the unique experiences of first-generation students, including academic transitions, financial literacy, career exploration, and personal growth.

Additionally, the First in the Family House celebrates the resilience, achievements, and diverse backgrounds of its residents while fostering self-advocacy, leadership, and confidence. Through community events, social connections, and campus partner and peer support, students will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in college and beyond.

By building a strong foundation of support, empowerment, and shared success, the First in the Family House ensures that first-generation students feel valued, prepared, and motivated to make the most of their college experience while paving the way for future generations.

Open to all incoming students, this community provides a space within our residence halls that promotes personal wellness, social connectedness, and academic success centering the First Generation Student experience.

1st Year First in the Family House LLC residents can only be roommates with residents in the following LLCs:

  • First in the Family House LLC
  • Mosaic House LLC
  • International House LLC

  • Are 1st Years are interested in learning more about college information and resources that benefit first generation students at Gonzaga.
  • Want to live in community with other Zags to engage in supportive dialogue around multi-dimensions of wellbeing all from the lens of the first generation student experience.
  • Are 1st Years that want to connect and engage with students, staff, faculty, and campus partners who are engage around work that supports First Generation identifying students.

The First in the Family House LLC for 1st years has several partners involved in the community. 

Community Learning Outcomes:

  1. Explore First-Generation Identity and Experience
    Students will engage in opportunities to understand what it means to be a first-generation college student, reflecting on their unique experiences while developing confidence in their academic and personal growth.
  2. Build Connections and Support Networks
    Students will establish meaningful relationships with first-generation students, faculty, and staff, fostering a sense of belonging and creating a supportive community that encourages success.
  3. Develop Strategies for Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Success
    Students will share experiences about obstacles they have faced, learn strategies for overcoming challenges, and participate in programs designed to support their college transition, academic persistence, and overall success at Gonzaga.
