Faculty Carrel Policy

Research Carrels

The Foley Center Library offers five research carrels for use by Gonzaga faculty, Gonzaga employees pursuing their PhD, and Gonzaga employees pursuing their graduate degree. Carrels are assigned for a full academic year. For information, contact Laura Hutton hutton@gonzaga.edu (509) 313-3813 or Brad Matthies matthies@gonzaga.edu (509) 313-7017.

Applications

Applications for the coming academic year will be accepted November 1st – November 15th.

To apply, fill out our Online Application Form.

When applications exceed the number of available carrels, we will assign carrels based on this order: 1) Faculty, 2) Employees pursuing their PhD, and 3) Employees pursuing their graduate degree. Applications that cannot be filled due to availability will be placed on the waiting list (see below).

Faculty and employees who submit applications outside the application window will be considered on a case-by-case basis, dependent on availability of carrels.

Notification of Assignments

Notification of carrel assignments will be sent to faculty by January 15th.

Waiting List

A waiting list will go into effect when carrel demand exceeds supply, with names added to the list in the order they are received. Faculty will be notified as openings occur.

Renewals

Carrel assignments can be renewed for one additional semester upon request.

Occupancy

Faculty will have occupancy from the start of the spring semester to the fall semester's close (January – December).

Furniture and Maintenance

Carrels are furnished with a chair, desk, and a locking overhead cabinet. Library furniture from other areas of the building may not be moved into the carrels.

Heaters, heating elements, microwaves and other electrical appliances are prohibited as they pose a fire hazard.

Food and drink are permitted in the carrel with the understanding that the employee is responsible for the tidiness of the carrel.

Carrels may not be used for purposes other than active research.

Silent Study Zone

The research carrels are in a Silent Study Zone and are not soundproof. As such, we advise the use of headphones when listening to streaming media.

Lost Keys

The Gonzaga employee who was issued the key is responsible for replacement key cost. Plant services assess the replacement cost at $50 per carrel key.

Security

Carrels should always be locked when not in use. The library assumes no responsibility for the loss of, or damage to, personal possessions kept in carrels.

For security reasons, occupants of carrels must not obscure the windows in their carrel with paper or other materials.
