Why study the history of western philosophy?
As a testament to the importance of a living tradition committed to the pursuit of truth or the love of wisdom, to study the great thinkers, ideas and movements of the past, awakens you to arguments and beliefs which underscore our current discourses, systems and values.
Further, understanding the various concerns of the tradition provides thinkers with infinite resources for amassing an understanding of the self, society and humanity at large.
Our faculty has expertise in ancient Greek, medieval and modern philosophy with strengths in Plato and the Platonic Tradition, Thomism, Kantian Metaphysics/Ethics and German Romanticism. Moreover, within contemporary philosophy, all the major movements of the twentieth century are available:

- Process Philosophy/American Pragmatism
- Neo-Scholasticism
- Structuralism & Post-Structuralism
- Feminism
- Analytic philosophy
Research in all these areas is supported by one of the best history of philosophy library collections in the Northwest housed in Gonzaga’s Foley Library.
