American Pragmatism

Focus on one of the newest schools of thought

It started out as a counter to abstract European philosophies like metaphysics which many American philosophers felt were designed to keep philosophy inaccessible.

“Classical American Pragmatist” philosophers include Charles Sanders Pierce, John Dewey, and William James, as well as W. E. B. DuBois, George Santayana, and Alfred North Whitehead. Emphasizing the value of change and becoming over being, this movement is also associated with Process Philosophy.

The Edinburgh Critical Edition of the Complete Works of Alfred North Whitehead is housed at Gonzaga and led by its founder and General Editor, Dr. Brian G. Henning.

The Critical Edition of Whitehead employs up to two graduate students annually as Editorial Assistants to help with transcription.

Students accepted into the program and interested in becoming Editorial Assistants can email Dr. Henning directly at henning@gonzaga.edu
