Dr. Sacha Kopp, former Provost

Dear Members of the Gonzaga Community,

It is with deep sadness that I share the following news with you. Yesterday afternoon, Gretchen Olson Kopp informed us that her husband, former Provost Sacha Kopp had passed away – suddenly, and unexpectedly, at home. The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack.

As one can imagine, Sacha’s untimely death is an unimaginable tragedy to his wife, his children, Eleanor and Eli, and their entire family – including his mother, Anita. This will also be incredibly difficult news to the many colleagues, community members, and board members with whom he worked over the course of his career. An accomplished particle physicist, following his career as a faculty member Provost Kopp worked as an administrator at several universities, immediately embracing his role at Gonzaga with enthusiasm and hard work. He spent countless hours tackling challenges and identifying opportunities that might help Gonzaga become a better and more effective university. He deeply appreciated the colleagues in the Provost’s Office with whom he worked, the faculty and staff with whom he partnered, and relished opportunities to participate in student events across the year.

I ask that you please remember and keep Sacha, Gretchen, Eleanor, Eli and their family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. Those who might wish to send a message of condolence to the family may do so care of my office or the Office of the Provost. As more information about memorial services become available, we will share this with the community.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
