SUBJ: | Thoughts & Prayers – for Those Impacted by Earthquake in Taiwan |
DATE: | April 3, 2024 |
As you have undoubtedly heard, early this morning, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan, followed by hundreds of aftershocks that have caused landslides and collapsed buildings. The media reports that at least nine people have died and more than 1,000 have been injured as rescuers work to free dozens trapped in the debris. The quake was centered in Hualien County on the eastern coast of Taiwan, where operations are underway to reach 77 people trapped in mountain tunnels. This is the most powerful quake to hit Taiwan in 25 years, and heavy aftershocks are expected over the coming days.
Our thoughts and prayers are with our Gonzaga students and community members from Taiwan, and with those similarly affected by these frightening events. We are thinking of them as they reach out to learn about the effects on family members and friends at home. Gonzaga’s Care and Support Resources are available to all in our campus community struggling with this situation. We will continue to monitor this situation and update the community as appropriate.
Be gracious to me, O God, be gracious to me, For my soul takes refuge in You; And in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge Until destruction passes by.
