Workshop Description

This workshop challenges participants to move beyond the comfort of "safe spaces" and engage in the courageous and sometimes uncomfortable conversations necessary to better understand systemic racism and its enduring impact on society. Focusing on the experiences of women, this session will explore how we can confront difficult topics around race and cultural awareness, foster deeper empathy, and develop more inclusive communities. By creating brave spaces where open dialogue is encouraged, participants will learn how to push beyond their personal boundaries and engage in meaningful discussions that promote awareness, healing, and growth.

Workshop Learning Objectives

  • Understand the importance and need for both safe & brave spaces
  • Enhance cultural awareness and empathy
  • Empower women to lead transformative conversations within their communities

Workshop Description

In this workshop, we will explore the importance of self-care through a critical lens that challenges the dominant, capitalistic narratives around personal well-being. Rather than focusing on self-care as a product to be consumed or an individual responsibility, we will delve into how societal expectations, particularly those placed on women, contribute to burnout, stress, and health disparities. Drawing from research and lived experiences, we will examine how gendered roles, cultural pressures, and systemic inequalities shape our relationship to rest, recovery, and self-nurturing. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to reclaim self-care practices that honor their humanity, promote collective well-being, and resist the harmful impacts of societal expectations.

Workshop learning objectives

  1. Analyze the impact of societal expectations
  2. Challenge capitalistic approaches to wellness
  3. Develop equitable self-care strategies
