Coffee/Tea Bar
Logan Elementary School (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM)
Logan Elementary school is home to 65 of Spokane’s immigrant and refugee population whose first languages are: Marshallese, Russian, Ukrainian, Nepali, Burmese, Swahili, Dari, Karen, Kinyarwanda, Bantu, Arabic, Spanish and French. Gonzaga has had a long-time partnership with Gonzaga with faculty and students benefiting from mutually supportive learning partnerships. As our JUSTEC guests, you will be visiting Ms. Maria Zamora’s English Development Class to discover how, through a pulled-out model, ELD students gain English fluency to readily access educational opportunities and achieve academic goals. Additionally, you will be visiting regular K-6th classrooms to experience their academic environment. Central to our visit will be our lunch in Logan’s cafeteria side by side English language learners.
Joel E Ferris High School (12:30 PM – 3:00 PM)
Joel E. Ferris High School is located on the South Hill in Spokane and has all recently been updated with cutting-edge technology. Students and staff are very proud of the fact that this past year Ferris was again rated highly by the U.S News as one of "America's Best Schools". In fact, Ferris was rated the highest of the Spokane School District High Schools. As our JUSTEC guests, you will be visiting the Ferris High School Newcomer Center where our keynote speaker, Ms. Mandy Manning taught for 9 years. The Newcomer Center has recently been recognized for its specialized English language development program for newly arrived refugee and immigrant students whose educators help them adjust to American culture; from navigating the cafeteria and reading body language to understanding classroom etiquette. We will spend time with Ms. Manning and her colleagues touring the school and joining in on classes.
