Statement on Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools
The Writing Center acknowledges the rising use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in writing, including in student writing projects from across the curriculum. Considering this reality, our tutors strive to help clients work productively and responsibly with AI, rather than against it. To this end, tutors benefit from open and transparent communication from clients regarding their use of AI as a writing assistant, as well as any parameters for AI use that their professors have communicated and that might pertain to Gonzaga’s Academic Integrity Policy. Simultaneously, we recognize the benefits of writing–in all stages–as a necessary cognitive process for student writers. Our tutors aim to work with clients to critically interrogate the benefits and drawbacks of using AI technology, in any capacity, while writing. Our tutors aim to work with clients to critically interrogate the benefits and drawbacks of using AI technology, in any capacity, while writing. Finally, as a resource that offers in-person assistance to student writers, tutors recognize that students who decide to come to the Writing Center are actively seeking interpersonal guidance and engagement during their writing process. Therefore, tutors will continue to prioritize their role as a distinctly human resource.
Statement on Accessibility
At our Writing Center, we aim to establish an accessible and inclusive environment, where each student and tutor feels supported. To foster this environment, our tutors are trained in the following areas:
- Being aware of disabilities that can commonly disrupt learning
- Understanding diverse learning styles: visual, auditory, linguistic, kinesthetic, etc.
- Adapting sessions to effectively meet the needs of students by being flexible and patient
- Creating inclusive signage and seating in our space
- Prioritizing inclusive language practices and having zero tolerance for ableist rhetoric
- Empowering students to communicate across and beyond the curriculum by acting as a resource for students
Again, we believe that welcoming students from diverse backgrounds enriches our community and enhances our learning experiences. This exchange of perspectives creates a mutually beneficial relationship, fostering growth and understanding for both our students and tutors alike. Our Writing Center is here to meet and accommodate you, where you are.
We welcome feedback on how to improve our accessibility services and are working towards updating our Writing Center website to allow all visitors to access its content without barriers. Please contact Writing Center director, John Eliason at eliason@gonzaga.edu for all inquiries.
Statement on Social Justice and Diversity
The Writing Center strives to serve all students at Gonzaga. Every student who engages with the Writing Center will be treated with respect, and all are welcome. Further, our tutors will not tolerate any writing that espouses hate or discrimination towards the dignity of any person, community, or identity. We embrace the educational and social benefits of a diverse learning environment that supports all learners regardless of their backgrounds, identities, and abilities.
