Conduct and Housing Probation

Sometimes a student may be placed on Housing or Conduct Probation as an outcome for a violation of the Student Code of Conduct. These two probationary periods have different expectations and are applied in different situations.

Housing Probation

What is Housing Probation? A period of time (typically a semester) in which a student's ability to reside in University owned, leased, or managed property is under review. Further violations of University expectations and policies while on Housing Probation may result in residential relocation, restrictions, or removal.

When is Housing Probation Assigned? It is typically assigned when a violation of the Student Code of Conduct has occurred in or around a residence hall. Furthermore, these incidents typically are related specifically to behavior that has impacted the residential community, such as disruptive behavior or incidents that required intervention from campus partners. Housing Probation would typically be assigned in the following scenarios when they occurred in or around the residence halls:

  • A first time violation of the alcohol policy related to mass quantities, drinking games, or provision to minors.
  • A second violation of the alcohol policy related to underage possession, use, or consumption.
  • A second violation of the drug policy related to underage possession, use, or consumption of marijuana.
  • Other situations that could place a student on Housing Probation include, but are not limited to, violations related to other substance use, damage, theft, vandalism, unauthorized entry, disorderly conduct, or failure to comply with a reasonable request.

Are there other things I should know about Housing Probation? While on Housing Probation, a student may not be eligible to participate in some University programs. This restriction is decided at the discretion of the department that oversees the program. Students should check with the department that oversees the program regarding eligibility restrictions.

Can I get off of Housing Probation early? The Resolution Center for Student Conduct and Conflict sponsors an optional program called the Good Neighbor Program. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to be removed from Housing Probation. Reach out to the Resolution Center for more information.

Conduct Probation

What is Conduct Probation? A period of time (typically a year) in which a student's conduct is under review. During this time, any further violations of University expectations and policies may result in an elevated response, including suspension or expulsion.

When is Conduct Probation Assigned? It is typically assigned when a student has engaged in repeated similar violations. It can also be assigned when a student has engaged in escalating misconduct. Finally, Conduct Probation may also be assigned if a student engaged in a single, severe violation of University policy.

Are there other things I should know about Conduct Probation? While on Conduct Probation, a student may not be eligible to participate in some University programs, including study abroad. This restriction is decided at the discretion of the department that oversees the program. Students should check with the department that oversees the program regarding eligibility restrictions.

Can I get off of Conduct Probation early? The Resolution Center for Student Conduct and Conflict sponsors an optional program called Community Restoration in Action. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to be removed from Conduct Probation no less than three months after the date of their notification. Reach out to the Resolution Center for more information.
