Living On Campus as part of the LGBTQIA+ Community?
Living on campus with a new roommate can be intimidating for EVERY student, but it's particularly stressful for students who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. The Gonzaga Housing and Resident Life Department (HRL) takes their mission statement very seriously: "to create a safe, inclusive and dynamic community that empowers students' wholistic development through social engagement and experiential learning."
If you're a part of the LGBTQIA+ community and would like that to be a part of your housing options, below you will see options to navigate with the Housing and Resident Life Department. Of course, it's best to reach out to them with more detailed questions on room assignments etc.
Housing resources around sexuality.
The HRL outlines this on their website here. Note they use the term "LGBQ+" (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Questioning) which might look a little odd to those of you used to seeing "LGBTQ+" (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning) as a label. It's not a typo or purposeful exclusion of the Trans community, but specifically a page discussing safe and affirming housing around sexuality. Since same-gender living situations might feel complicated for someone in the community, HRL wants to create a positive climate for all residents and match roommates with that understanding.
Gender Inclusive Housing.
Offered since 2017, Gender Inclusive housing, as discussed on the HRL website here, specifically outlines the creation of living options for those who are part of the trans, nonbinary, two-spirit, gender queer/diverse, or any student who doesn't feel tied to the gender binary. You can opt in to such housing and be matched with roommates who share or affirm that identity.
