Graph Theory

student team on Triominoes game

Drs. Hays Whitlatch and Kat Shultis oversee student research studying graphs, which are a collection of vertices (points) connected by edges (lines). The details of each project are determined by the needs of the application in mind. In their work, they translate an initial application to a situation involving a graph and then seek to answer the questions using the tools of graph theory.

One of the projects is mathematics found in the game Tri-Ominoes. In this game, triangular tiles have numbers in each corner and must be placed adjacent to tiles with matching numbers. The students presenting this work won a Best Poster award at the Pacific Inland Mathematics Undergraduate Conference in April 2024, and are writing a paper to submit for publication.
