Head to Barcelona and steep yourself into its vibrant sporting culture.

Barcelona has a deep sport history, hosting the World Cup, the Summer Olympic Games, the Paralympics, America’s Cup and various European championships.

You will be immersed in this energetic sporting culture and gain a comprehensive view of how sports intersect with the history, identity and managerial practices in Catalonia.

The experience includes meetings and hands-on projects with professional sporting organizations like:

  • FC Barcelona
  • Joventut Badalona
  • FC Espanyol
  • The Pau and Marc Gasol Foundation

Lead by Gonzaga faculty and based at the American College of the Mediterranean in Barcelona, the program is 6 credits, includes 3.5 weeks in Barcelona and requires online work before and after the study abroad experience.

Curriculum

The courses are hybrid with online components before and after your study abroad experience.

EDPE 594 International Sport Management & Culture – 3 Credits

The intersection between global sport and society is an emerging area of study that focuses on the management and cross-cultural context of sport and the issues that surface when sport is examined through an international lens. This course will prepare students to think critically about the governance, business activities, media operations, and cross-cultural context of modern sport on an international level. This course is an interdisciplinary course in which students will learn about the history, politics, economics, and sociology of sport in Catalonia. A major goal of this course is to bring greater awareness and understanding to cultural competencies and conflict management skills needed to function effectively in the international sport environment.

EDPE 613 Administration in Sport & Athletics – 3 Credits

Students will study organizational theories and practices with an emphasis on Spanish and Catalonian sport industries and organizations. Leadership styles and theories, organizational development, personnel, fiscal, and legal issues will be covered.
