Our Mission
The Institute for Informatics and Applied Technology (IIAT) establishes Gonzaga as a leader in responsible AI teaching, learning and creation. Building on the university’s mission of developing the whole person and leaning into its strength in teaching, the institute embraces AI as an integrated part of its distinctive brand of Jesuit education. Graduates in all disciplines will practice and balance technical proficiency with the ethical, philosophical and societal implications of AI and data-driven technologies. Faculty and students will challenge each other with interdisciplinary, intellectual inquiries inspired by AI advances. As informed professionals, they will be ready to navigate the complexities of a rapidly evolving world.
The IIAT’s three pillars are a catalyst for academic innovation, an interdisciplinary research hub and an economic propeller. These complement each other, with interdisciplinary research informing academic innovation and driving economic development; academic innovation strengthening workforce development; and business, research and economic expertise fostering exciting research and educational opportunities.
The Institute transforms how students, faculty, and staff across disciplines – as well as many sectors of the GU and greater Spokane community – learn, teach, research and innovate responsibly with AI.
