Fr. Joseph Cataldo S.J.

Father Joseph Cataldo, S.J., was a determined Jesuit missionary whose vision and perseverance led to the founding of Gonzaga University in 1887. Born in Italy in 1837, he joined the Society of Jesus and dedicated his life to serving Indigenous communities and Catholic settlers in the Pacific Northwest. Arriving in the region in the 1860s, Fr. His efforts culminated in the creation of Gonzaga College in Spokane, where he sought to provide a rigorous Jesuit education that would prepare students for leadership and service. Despite financial and logistical challenges, his unwavering commitment to the Jesuit tradition of learning and cura personalis ensured that Gonzaga would grow into the thriving institution it is today.
