Degrees: B.A. in Mathematics, B.S. in Mathematics and B.S. in Applied Mathematics

The B.A. and B.S. Mathematics major will:

  • Critically Analyze: Students should be able to determine the validity of a mathematical argument and suggest improvements to that argument.
  • Communicate Mathematically: Students should be able to communicate mathematical ideas precisely and clearly through written, oral, visual, and/or symbolic forms of expression
  • Abstraction: Students should appreciate mathematics in its own right and as a tool for abstraction. They should be able to solve problems using the abstract language and tools of mathematics.
  • Mechanical and Computational Skills: Students should demonstrate mechanical and computational proficiency in problem-solving using mathematical tools and processes.

The B.S. Applied Mathematics major will:

  • Analytic and computational proficiency.  Students should demonstrate a comprehensive proficiency in a variety of analytic techniques spanning diverse mathematical subject areas, including mathematical proof, critical analysis, and computational techniques.
  • Ability to apply mathematics to solve problems in other disciplines.  Students should demonstrate the ability to abstract and solve a variety of problems commonly found in science, engineering, and other disciplines using the abstract language and techniques of mathematics.
  • Basic computer and programming skills.  Students should demonstrate a basic proficiency in the fundamental techniques of computer programming and algorithmic thinking.
  • Ability to communicate mathematics.  Students should be able to communicate mathematical ideas precisely and clearly through written, oral, visual, and/or symbolic forms of expression.
