SSN Application Process

The ISSS team is here to assist you with your SSN application process. Please be sure to follow the steps below.
Before you apply for any jobs on or off campus, be sure to check in with your ISSS advisors first. Your advisor will help you go over relevant regulations, confirm your eligibility to work, and guide you through necessary processes.

Refer to the employment section and earn more about what you need to know with regard to on or off campus employment opportunities. DO NOT start working unless you’ve obtained approval from your ISSS advisor and have received your SSN.

1. The Social Security Administration (SSA) requires a support letter from ISSS. In order for us to write this letter for you, we will need your job offer letter to include:

  • Employer name
  • Employer address
  • Name of Supervisor/Title
  • Student Worker Position Title
  • Start Date
  • Number of hours per week

2. Visit the SSA office (714 N. Iron Bridge Way, Suite 100, Spokane) with the following

  • The support letter mentioned above
  • Your I-20, passport, visa, and I-94 which can be printed here: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home

3. Upon receiving an SSN receipt, your employer may allow you to start working

  • If this is an off-campus employment or internship – be sure you have work authorizations such as CPT or OPT before commencing your employment
  • If this is an on-campus position, bring your SSN receipt to the Student Employment Office for approval to start your position

4. Upon receiving your SSN which takes approximately two weeks, provide your SSN to your employer

Visit Payroll office regarding any taxes that may apply to your earnings.
