Gonzaga Strategic Language Plan (2023-2028)
Gonzaga's 2023 Strategic Plan includes the commitments to "expos[e] students on our campus to diverse learners...from all over the globe," "intentionally diversify [the] student body," and "become a more inclusive and equitable institution." Meeting the opportunity and challenge of a more linguistically diverse student body calls for coordinated efforts and student, staff, and faculty support across campus.
To support these commitments, we propose a 5-year Strategic English Language Plan which coincides with the GU's Strategic Plan. While still in the development phase, elements of the plan include:
- Analyzing current English proficiency entry requirements and subsequent student outcomes.
- Providing synchronous and asynchronous training opportunities for faculty and staff on working with multilingual international students.
- Listening to and collecting data regarding faculty and student challenges.
- Collaborating and communicating across student support services (advising, tutoring, etc.) to more effectively support multilingual students.
- Producing a shared, campus-wide document detailing how Gonzaga will support the ongoing language acquisition of its multilingual (i.e. ESL) student population.
