SUBJ: | Thoughts & Prayers - for Those Impacted by the Devastating Fires in Hawai'i |
DATE: | August 9, 2023 |
Each summer, wildfires threaten communities close to home and around the world. Overnight a series of wildfires, driven by hurricane-force winds, broke out on the islands of Maui and Hawai’i. A massive fire has devastated much of the coastal town of Lahaina, Maui and is forcing large-scale evacuations of West Maui. At least six people have died, many more are injured and suffering from burns and smoke inhalation, and the wildfires continue to burn in numerous hotspots.
Gonzaga has 69 students and many alumni who call the islands of Hawai’i home. The people of Lahaina, Maui, and the entire community of Hawai’i are in our hearts today. Our thoughts and prayers go out especially for those within our Gonzaga community from Hawai’i, and those who have family and friends affected by this disaster. If there are any students or community members suffering from this or other traumatic experiences, please consider reaching out for support, so that we can be of assistance to you.
