Leading in a Jesuit University

Leading in a Jesuit University supports all Gonzaga employees to build and stay connected to the foundation of our mission as a Catholic, Jesuit, humanistic institution. Staff & administrators who desire to increase their mission literacy, build community, and infuse mission more deeply into their work should consider the Cardoner Mission Formation Program. Program begins in September. Faculty opportunities begin in the spring semester.

Munch & Learn: Reflection Practices at a Catholic, Jesuit University

Living the Lingo: Accompanying Students with Hope (with a focus on civic engagement)

Go beyond the buzzwords! Living the Lingo is a series that explore key concepts related to mission. This semester, we consider what it means to accompany students in the creation of a hope-filled future, especially as it relates to citizenship and civic engagement. We'll examine the term "accompaniment" in the Jesuit tradition and share examples from around Gonzaga. RSVP here.

Discernment Workshop for mid- and later-career faculty

Dates: Wednesdays, November 6, 13, and 20
Time: 8-9:50 a.m.
Location: Humanities 243 (Reading Room)
This three-part series is intended for faculty who are exploring what's next in this season of their career. Through interactive sessions, we'll learn about and apply wisdom from Ignatian discernment to one's professional and personal journey. Complete the Discernment Workshop Registration Form.

Commemoration of the UCA Martyrs: Prayer, Pupusas, Purpose

Date: Thursday, November 7
Time: 3:15 p.m. (prayer at 3:30pm, table conversations & refreshments at 4pm)
Location: Della Strada Jesuit Community
With Gonzaga colleagues, St. Aloysius parishioners, Jesuits, and others, we will celebrate and remember those witnesses for justice and liberation who were murdered at the Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) in El Salvador in 1989. In honor of this 35th anniversary, we will pray, tell stories, and make connections to our own experience as people working for a more just and loving world.

Review & Renew | One Day Retreat

Save the date: Tuesday, January 7, 2025
Location: Bozarth Mansion
Begin the new year and new semester with an intentional pause to rest, review, and renew. This one-day retreat will include spaciousness for personal reflection and enjoying the beautiful Bozarth Mansion and grounds. Registration details coming soon.

 


Ongoing Opportunities

  • Contemplation and Conversation: A Weekly Scripture Prayer Group | A group of faculty and staff meets Wednesdays from 12:10 p.m. - 12:50 p.m. for prayer and sharing based on Scripture. Interested? Contact MissionEnagement@gonzaga.edu.
  • Black Liturgies | Mondays 12:15-12:45pm in Humanities Reading Room (243). Black Liturgies is an inclusive community practice that holds space for all identities and spiritual practices and is shaped by the work of Cole Arthur Riley. Open to ALL members of the GU community. Organized by the College of Arts and Sciences with campus partners.
  • Community Writing Space | Tuesdays 8-10:30am in Humanities 123 and 135. Protected time and space for focused work on scholarly or creative pursuits. Stay for as short or as long as you’d like. Hosted by Mission Engagement and the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Catholic Mass is celebrated weekdays at 12:10 p.m. at the Della Strada Jesuit Community and on Sundays at 8 p.m. in University Chapel.

Description: Karen Eifler, a teacher from the University of Portland & director of the Center of Catholic Intellectual Life & American Culture, speaks on the Catholic element of our mission, exploring the engagement of Catholic Intellectual Tradition, treating it less as a static canon, and more like an orientation to take any text or phenomenon.


First Spiritual Exercises on Zoom

Description: The First Spiritual Exercises offers a taste of Ignatian Spirituality. This monthlong program is open to any GU employee (faculty, staff, administrator) and features daily personal reflection and weekly group sharing. This retreat is called "Inner Peace in Friendship with Jesus" with readings that align especially with Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. (no session 3/13 over Spring Break). Materials are provided.


Laudate Deum Workshop

Dates: Tuesday, March 19th, 2024 & Wednesday March 27th, 2024

Time: 10:45AM-12:15PM on 3/19/24 & 12:00PM-1:30PM on 3/27/24

Location: Hearth Room, College Hall 3rd Floor

Description: GU faculty who already teach Laudato Si' (in part or whole) in the classroom are invited to a workshop to incorporate the most recent papal document on the environment, Laudate Deum. Feel free to bring your course materials to the workshop to refresh and engage with colleagues. 


Unsettling the Mission

Abide in Love: Ignatian Silent Retreat

Description: Quiet the noise and rest from the busy-ness at a three-day silent retreat.
