Dr. Kottwitz is an associate professor and Program Director of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program. She has been in practice as a registered nurse for 40 years, with 20 years at the advanced practice level. She has taught in undergraduate, graduate and Doctor of Nursing Practice courses.

Dr. Kottwitz maintains a private psychiatric practice in her community. Prior to private practice, she worked in leadership positions at a state hospital providing individual and group therapy, served as a Program Director of an interdisciplinary team and engaged in staff education and protocol/policy development. Dr. Kottwitz is engaged in community service as a member of the board of directors at a community mental health center. She also volunteers as a member of the content expert panel for the American Nurses Credentialing Center PMHNP exam.

She is currently engaging with the WA State Department of Health to examine the impact of an advanced practice compact license. She is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and Sigma Theta Tau. She has been engaged in education development and evaluation of statewide suicide prevention efforts and contributed to practice and education via national presentations and publications. She was inducted as a Distinguished Fellow in the National Academies of Practice.
