In her work at Twitter, Libby Laveson inspires authentic and purpose-driven action.

For most of us, Twitter is a quick way to stay in touch with friends or catch up on celebrity gossip. For Libby Laveson (’06, B.S. Applied Communication, ’08 M.A. Communication & Leadership Studies), it’s nothing less than a way to live out her purpose and change the world for the better.

Gonzaga’s online master’s program in communication and leadership studies, was an important factor when she took the position of running internal communications at Twitter. A communications degree leading to a social-media job—makes sense, right?

Laveson sees a more profound connection. At Gonzaga, she learned that authenticity is the most powerful leadership trait. It’s an ethos she practices every day: “I guide leaders on what kind of vision they provide for our company, and on being their authentic selves.”

Likewise, she credits Gonzaga with enabling her authentic self to emerge, thanks to the Jesuit emphasis on developing mind, body and spirit. She says Gonzaga taught her that “it’s about bringing your full self to the table, and being true to your path.”

The trail Laveson is blazing, Gonzaga’s educational ideals and Twitter’s corporate vision all share the same uncompromising goal: “To better the world—turning knowledge into action and connecting it to the greater purpose you have in your life and your community.”
