Amanda Clark to Discuss China’s Last Jesuit

SPOKANE, Wash. – Amanda Clark, Ph.D., director of the library and associate dean of special programs at Whitworth University, will discuss “China’s Last Jesuit: Charles J. McCarthy, S.J., and the End of the Mission in Catholic Shanghai,” at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 20 in the Hemmingson Center Auditorium at Gonzaga University.

The lecture, sponsored by Gonzaga’s Catholic Studies program, is free and open to the public. Father McCarthy studied at Gonzaga prior to being sent to the China mission. He was the last Jesuit sent to China before it became communist. Fr. McCarthy spent many years in prison in China before he was released and returned to the United States.

The lecture will examine the Jesuit missionary activity in China before communism, and will be highlighted by rare photographs both gathered by Clark in China and from Jesuit archives. Clark wrote a book, published this year, also titled “China’s Last Jesuit: Charles J. McCarthy and the End of the Mission in Catholic Shanghai.”
