Gonzaga Biology Major Alex Murphy Earns Research Award

July 01, 2014
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga senior biology major Alex Murphy is one of eight recipients of the Genetics Society of America Undergraduate Travel Award, which provides financial assistance to allow undergraduates to present their research at GSA conferences.

Starting July 29, Murphy will spend six days attending the Yeast Genetics Meeting at the University of Washington in Seattle. The meeting will include research presentations from students, postdoctoral fellows, research staff and scientific researchers.

Murphy, a native of Portland, Oregon says she is researching “how an extra chromosome in a cell, generated by a common mistake in cell division, affects how that cell can function. I’m using brewer’s yeast as a model organism to pursue this question.” Her Gonzaga mentor for the research is Kirk Anders, associate professor of biology.
