Gonzaga Bookstore, Main Cafeteria Open in Boone Avenue Retail Center

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University’s planned construction of the transformative University Center, scheduled to open in 2015, translates into some significant changes for students this fall. With classes scheduled to begin Sept. 3, students will find both the ZagShop, Gonzaga’s bookstore, and The Marketplace, their main cafeteria, relocated to the Boone Avenue Retail Center – known as BARC.

Located at the corner of Boone Avenue and Hamilton Street, the BARC is open and ready to serve students for the 2013-14 academic year. The BARC, which offers 650 parking spaces over three floors, will be the permanent home for the 17,500-square-foot ZagShop. The Marketplace, which features open dining for nearly 600 students at a time, will eventually move into the University Center once it opens.

Both the bookstore and The Marketplace had been located in the COG, which was demolished to clear the way for construction of the University Center. Employees at both The ZagShop and The Marketplace are excited about the moves.

“The biggest advantage for us is for the kitchen staff in the back,” said Sodexo’s Dan Harris, resident dining director. “We’ve got a lot more equipment and a lot more room to work.”

Ken Roughton, manager of the ZagShop, also is pleased.

“Generally, we’re saying we have three times the sales floor,” Roughton said, adding the change will allow the ZagShop to carry much more GU merchandise.
