Gonzaga Develops, Adopts a Fitting Fight Song

December 02, 2010
Gonzaga University will roll out a new official fight song this fall to help inspire the Bulldogs on to victory. For more than 75 years, Gonzaga has been using the Washington and Lee Swing, a tune shared by more than 40 other colleges and high schools throughout the country. Lyrics to the original fight song were written for football, adapted to basketball in 1988, but the song was never widely used.

To remedy the situation, the Kennel Club approached David Fague (’00), Gonzaga’s director of jazz studies and head of the Gonzaga Pep Band, in search of a new fight song. Thanks to Fague, who came up with the tune while hiking, and 2010 alumnus Kevin Laxar, Gonzaga now has a fight song fit to rally behind at athletic and spirit events.

“This way Gonzaga can have its own unique fight song,” Fague said. “It will no longer be generic and borrowed.”

The song, an original melody that Fague composed, incorporates the chant “Go! Gonzaga! G-O-N-Z-A-G-A,” which has become such a familiar cheer at Gonzaga events.

Go, Gonzaga!

Gonzaga Bulldogs, rally and fight!

With heart and hustle, triumph tonight,

Defend the Kennel with all your might

Bringing glory to our Alma Mater

Mighty Bulldogs, answer the call,

And champions we will be!

With Jesuit pride,

Defend the true blue and white

Fight on to Victory!

G…O…N…Z-A-G-A!

G…O…N…Z-A-G-A!

Go! Gonzaga! G-O-N-Z-A-G-A!

Go! Gonzaga! G-O-N-Z-A-G-A!

Go! Gonzaga! G-O-N-Z-A-G-A!

Go! Gonzaga! Fight! Fight! Fight!

Oh, Mighty Bulldogs, answer the call,

And champions we will be!

With Jesuit pride,

Defend the true blue and white

Fight on to Victory!
