About This Event

"Black Liturgies" for Staying Human: A Space for Healing aims to create a space and practice of worship grounded in safety, inclusion, and community.

Using Cole Arthur Riley’s prayer, poem, and meditation book, "Black Liturgies" as a guide, the event will foreground an accessible, open, and wonder-inducing spirituality “grounded not in articulation of doctrine or creed, but in storytelling, myth, humor, and the Black body” (xvi).

Liturgies will draw from and speak to a variety of spiritual practices including:
- Black spirituality
- queer spirituality
- mythical spirituality
- ‘traditional’ spiritual formations [e.g. Christian, Jewish, Muslim]

Each session will follow this draft liturgical template with room for collaborators to draw readings from Cole Arthur Riley’s Black Liturgies. There are Riley's 20 copies to get us started). Collaborators may also choose their own selections related to the theme.

Schedule:
Twice per week (Tuesdays and Fridays from Feb 2 - Spring Break). Each week will draw on the liturgical offerings in Black Liturgies: Prayers, Poems, and Meditations for Staying Human (as well as collaborator contributions, when desired).
- Tuesdays @ 8:15 – 8:45am
- Fridays @ 12:15 – 12:45pm

Rotating locations:
- 2nd floor reading room, Humanities Building

- UMEC (Hemmingson)

- Lincoln LGBTQ Center

- Hearth Room, College Hall
