About This Event
Not only did Ridley Scott’s Gladiator win the Best Picture Oscar and finish as the second-highest-grossing film of 2000, but it also ended a remarkable 36-year drought of big-budget films set in ancient Rome. A key factor in its remarkable success is the way it reinvented a stagnant genre for a new millennium. On the eve of Gladiator II’s premiere, Dr. Dave Oosterhuis of Gonzaga's Classical Civilizations Department will examine what kept Rome of the silver screen for so long, how Gladiator successfully reimagined it, and what came next.
The lecture will be held Thursday, November 21, 3:30-4:30, in the Hemmingson Center Auditorium, which is on the basement level. There is free parking in the ramp across the street.
