About This Event
Jim Stockton (Emeritus Philosophy, Boise State University) sketches out the history of the Oxford Socratic Club in the mid-1900s. The Oxford Socratic Club was presided over by famous Christian author and apologist C. S. Lewis, who was professor of English literature at Magdalen College, Oxford, from 1925-54. The history of the Oxford Socratic Club also sheds light on Lewis' view of the integration of faith and reason.
Jim Stockton received his M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Nevada-Reno and an M.A. in English from Boise State University. He is Emeritus Lecturer of Philosophy at Boise State University, where he taught from 1998-2019; at Boise he also taught literature and humanities for the Department of English. Jim's primary interests are the history of philosophy, aesthetics, philosophy and film, and the Inklings, an informal literary discussion group associated with the University of Oxford that included famous authors C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien. Jim Stockton’s book, The Oxford University Socratic Club, 1942-1972: A Life is under contract with Lexington Books and scheduled for publication in 2024.
