Our current research involves monitoring water quality in local streams. The work is in collaboration with the Civil Engineering Department in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences here at Gonzaga. The civil engineers are developing methods to improve the water quality of local streams. We provide the analytical chemistry necessary to determine the efficacy of these methods. Specifically, we are determining nitrate, phosphate, and metal concentrations in stream water. We use ion chromatography and colorimetric methods to determine anion concentrations and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine metal concentrations.
